Object Process Network (OPN)
OPN is a domain-neutral, executable meta-language that was
created as part of Benjamin Hsueh Yung Koo's 2005 Ph.D. thesis
research at MIT in the Enginering Systems Division (ESD) and
the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department (Aero-Astro).
Ben's research focused on automating labor intensive parts of
reasoning in systems architecting. OPN provides support
for integrated, consistent communication and computation across
domains, handling discrete, continuous and probablistic
variables in a consistent manner.
For an introduction to this wonderfully innovative work,
see the Abstract and Introduction in Ben's
Thesis in the
OPN Public Directory.
OPN is also known as the Crawley Machine in honor of the
sponsorship and inspiration of Prof. Edward Crawley,
Executive Director of the Cambridge-MIT Institute; and
Professor, Aeronautics and Astronautics Department, MIT,
Cambridge, MA, USA
An initial OPN Usage Tutorial draft by Jay Conne and Ben Koo
introduces thinking about problems from an OPN perspective
through 5 examples. Each is presented in a step-by-step
manner and then analyzed for the insights it can provide to
the first-time user.
OPN was first publically presented at the
Greater Boston Chapter of the ACM at MIT on March 17, 2005.
The thesis and tutorial are now available in the
public directory linked below.
